Melissa Smith, RYT

Melissa started practicing yoga 13 years ago to help heal sports injuries, and to increase her focus and concentration. In 2002, she traveled to Hawaii for a vacation and ended up trying Bikram Hot Yoga for the first time. She fell in love with it. Returning to Virginia Beach, she realized that her true desire was to teach Bikram Yoga, but had no means of making that happen. As fate works out, Melissa won a sweepstakes from Coca Cola, which was being held at a local surf shop. The prize money was the exact amount of the cost of Bikram's Yoga College of India Teacher Training Program, and, yes, Melissa definitely believes in miracles. After two physically and mentally exhausting months in Los Angeles, she finished Bikram's 500 hour certification program. Melissa has completed her associates degree in Dietetics and Nutrition, and, with the help of her yoga practice, incorporates this knowledge to achieve a healthy lifestyle. In June of 2004, Melissa received her Level II Vinyasa Training certification from Jimmy Barkan. She has assisted Jimmy at Kripalu and has trained and done workshops with Bikram Choudry, Baron Baptiste, Paul Grilley, Shiva Rea, Christy Brock, Annie Pace and others. Melissa has also done workshops with Sean Corne, practicing medical intuition techniques and healing through energy centers (chakras). She finds liberation through studying all styles of yoga and incorporates this sense of freedom into her teaching.
